While watching a Spanish video on YouTube to improve my language skills, I heard reference to a quote by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. I looked it up and it touched me deeply.
“The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen."
I do believe we are all beautiful people in-the-making. Knowing grief can leave us feeling more compassionate toward others who know similar grief. Knowing loss through death can offer the opportunity to cherish every breathing moment we have and to appreciate the presence of people we share significant connections with. Life is too short to be unkind. Once we ourselves have healed enough to fill up our ‘kindness reservoir,’ we can begin to let kindness splash and spill out onto others. Like Pinocchio becoming a real boy or the Velveteen Rabbit becoming real through the love of his owner, we can become real beautiful people by walking through the fire of defeat, suffering, struggle, or loss.
